John has informed me that the information about the tops of the pyramids in my last post is incorrect. The outside stone, which was limestone, was removed by some conquering peoples to build their homes. That's why there is still smooth stone at the top. And it also explains all the rock rubble around the bases of the pyramids.
The editor regrets this mistake.
